Facts about Quartz worktops
There is little doubt that a quartz worktop is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Given that it is a man-made product (an engineered stone which can contain up to 10% resin and pigment), the variety of colours available can readily change the character of the kitchen.
The appearance will depend on how the quartz is ground. A coarsely ground quartz will produce a flecked finish, whilst the finely ground quartz creates a smooth look. Small amounts of glass or metallic flecks can be added to create many beautiful textures.
As quartz is one of the hardest materials on the planet, it is resistant to cracks and scratches. Chips rarely need to be repaired. Because of its durability, quartz is virtually maintenance free. Everyday care is straightforward but needed to be taken to safeguard its quality and appearance.
The surface should be wiped down with a soft rag, warm water and a mild soap or ammonia-based liquid. Any hardened spills can be scraped off gently with a putty knife (but not a sharp metal) or a glass or surface cleanser. It is advisable to use some form of trivet beneath hot pans and similar objects as the resins contained within the quartz are not indestructible.
These maintenance tips, however, are straightforward enough to undertake and are far outweighed by the advantages that quartz offers. Indeed, the material has several advantages over granite worktops. These include :
- More flexible as it contains polymers and resins, making it less likely to chip and crack
- Harder than granite, therefore making it more durable
- Non-porous, therefore sealing is never required
- Texture makes it virtually bacteria-free
The flexibility that quartz offers means that individual design and colour can easily match any kitchen décor and one of its most appreciated qualities is its natural cleanliness, the non-porous surface ensuring that the surface remains almost entirely free of bacteria.
As there are many varieties of quartz, there are naturally some engineered stones which are the most popular. Currently, the most popular Quartz worktops are the types that imitate marble and the ones that include mirror flecks.
