Why is Granite good for worktops?
Though granite shares many of its traits with quartz, it is its uniqueness which sets it apart. Its life begins just below the Earth’s surface, formed by the crystallisation and cooling of magma. Mined from 100% pure, natural stone, it is this process which give it its own individuality, each slab unique in its own way.
Given it is a natural rock, it is quarried straight from the Earth in the form of a large block before being sliced into individual slabs. The granite is then polished, usually with diamond tipped tools, to give it a smooth, shiny appearance. Its mineral composition can vary dramatically and therefore its pattern and colour is uniquely different depending where in the world it has been quarried.
It is easy to see why granite is such a popular choice for domestic worktops as its properties are plentiful. Its durability and resilience ensure it is easily able to stand up to the day to day rigours of a family kitchen.
Because it is a natural stone, and therefore each sliced slab is different, it does not offer as many colour variations as quartz, though its beauty comes from its individual distinction. It is a stone which does not depreciate in value, and can therefore be used as a tool to help boost the value and appeal of a property in the housing market.
Maintenance is still key, however, but every day cleaning is enough to preserve its natural state. Warm water and soap are usually sufficient to prevent staining and retain the sheen, but a PH neutral detergent would also bring the same results. Finish with a chamois leather cloth to ensure removal of any streaks in the surface. As with quartz, it is important not to use any scouring pads or detergents. Finally, it is worth sealing the stone every few years to avoid liquids seeping in but seek expert advice to carry this procedure out.
